Why Arbutus Coaching? Or, what’s in a name?
I chose the name Arbutus Coaching for a number of reasons. The arbutus tree, also known as the madrona, is native to forests on North America’s Pacific Coast, the region I call home. It’s also my favourite tree. It shares many characteristics with my clients who successfully negotiate life’s rugged terrain. The trees are magnificent, strong and unique and show their full beauty while clinging to rocky bluffs and crags overlooking the ocean. They thrive in sandy, rocky soil, where less hardy types perish. They are survivors, enduring both wet and windy winters and dry, hot, coastal summers. During the worst of droughts, they let a branch, or parts of a branch die, ensuring that the rest of the tree will live. They become shape shifters as they search for light, growing horizontally if they have to. And instead of shedding leaves, they shed their bark, not unlike the metamorphosis people go through as they shed their former selves and become the people they were meant to be. Lastly, once these trees take root, nothing uproots them.
As the owner of Arbutus Coaching, I am committed to ensuring that my clients can adapt successfully to whatever their circumstances, thrive wherever they are planted, and move toward their highly personal definition of “the light.” Because that, by any yardstick, translates into a highly satisfying and successful life. And isn’t that what we're all after, when you get right down to it? |
